Feb 19, 2020 - This project underscores the importance of standards and governance of token innovation in managing digital assets. It takes an in-depth look at the Token Taxonomy Initiative, a new open standards effort championed by a who’s who of enterprise blockchain, from Accenture and Enterprise Ethereum Alliance to Microsoft and Web3 Labs. Its members have taken a first-principles blockchain-agnostic approach to developing a Token Taxonomy Framework, which is expected to help unify our understanding of the token economy without sacrificing the decentralization that makes it so powerful. It starts with token types and progresses to token properties, w...

Mar 22, 2019 - The use of artificial intelligence is diffusing, making it one of the broadest technological revolutions ever. Blockchain technology has the unique ability to improve the reliability of AI training data and secure AI implementations through smart contracts and on-chain governance. This project examines AI, the differences among centralized, decentralized, and distributed AI, the utility of autonomous agents, and current scalability and governance challenges.

Patents and Blockchain Innovation
File Type: Document, Infographic
https://www.blockchainresearchinstitute.org/project/patents-and-blockchain-innovation/
Jan 29, 2018 - This research examines the basics of US patent law and its application to blockchain technologies, including the impact of Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International decision. The author compares the benefits and the drawbacks of different patent strategies, such as voluntary communal coordination, and provides recommendations for future innovation and regulation so that the community can access foundational blockchain patents while the inventors and those who invested in the essential patents receive fair compensation.

Jun 18, 2019 - This case details the problems that need to be solved, specifically how photographers can maximize the value of their intellectual property. It explains how the KODAKOne platform works and walks through several use cases. It also discusses such non-technical obstacles as the different copyright laws across jurisdictions, costly legal processes, and different interpretations of legal concepts like as fair use and exhaustion. The case also describes how Kodak might reinvent its brand within the competitive digital image platform ecosystem.

Issued Patents on Blockchain Innovation
File Type: Document, Infographic
https://www.blockchainresearchinstitute.org/project/issued-patents-on-blockchain-innovation/
Aug 31, 2019 - This project surveys patents issued globally in the blockchain space, compares them to the nature and volume of patents in the Internet space, and puts them into categories of innovation. The author walks through a careful analysis of the claims of issued patents, for companies to decide whether to avoid such patents or to design around their claims. He identifies deficiencies in the patent office review of prior art, which—when rectified—could render a patent invalid. Finally, he discusses strategic uses of patent offices and the federal court system in the defense of or dispute over an issued patent.
