State of Enterprise Blockchain: A Mid-Year Review

Research Overview

Author: Bob Tapscott
Release Date: June 28, 2021

Abstract:

This project reports on the state of the enterprise blockchain space. It begins with commentary on the state of the world writ large—from the pandemic’s effects on the economy and the global need for vaccinations to the K-shaped recovery and the consequences of helicopter money (e.g., inflation). It covers a series of developments relevant to enterprise users: the price volatility of cryptocurrencies, the shortcomings of consensus mechanisms for enterprise needs, the growth of stablecoins, the status of tokenless blockchains and blockchain-as-a-service offerings, and the latest on central bank digital currencies (e.g., China’s digital currency electronic payment initiative). It concludes with a summary of implementation challenges that enterprise applications must overcome to gain traction. It’s time for blockchain innovators to address enterprise leaders’ tough questions about use cases, regulation, criminal usage, and environmental harm.

Blockchain Revolution in the Oil and Gas Industry

This project shows how blockchain innovators in oil and gas are reimagining the energy industry from exploration and discovery to asset retirement and environmental renewal. It highlights use cases for tracking carbon and trading carbon credits (e.g., Guild One’s Energy Blockchain Exchange), coordinating contracts among multiple partners, assuring land and royalty rights, digitizing oil and gas post-trade settlement (e.g, Quorum-based Vakt for commodity trading post processing), streamlining and automating compliance, monitoring operations, maintenance, and inspections, all the while transitioning to a sustainable future.

Filecoin and the Future of Decentralized Cloud Storage

Filecoin is a decentralized protocol that anyone can download to rent out spare storage space on their computer. An alternative to traditional cloud storage, the Filecoin blockchain-based storage solution leverages a peer-to-peer architecture, creating massively scalable storage capacity without building massive new infrastructure. Instead of entrusting one company to store and protect valuable digital assets and documents in a single jurisdiction, customers can split up and store their assets on different computers around the world. The low barriers to entry and the economic rewards for miners make for ample supply of storage, keeping fees quite attractive; and the dispersion of files makes them difficult to hack, seize, or take down. This research walks executives through enterprise use cases and the benefits of participating in decentralized storage networks.
