State of Enterprise Blockchain: A Mid-Year Review

Research Overview

Author: Bob Tapscott
Release Date: June 28, 2021

Abstract:

This project reports on the state of the enterprise blockchain space. It begins with commentary on the state of the world writ large—from the pandemic’s effects on the economy and the global need for vaccinations to the K-shaped recovery and the consequences of helicopter money (e.g., inflation). It covers a series of developments relevant to enterprise users: the price volatility of cryptocurrencies, the shortcomings of consensus mechanisms for enterprise needs, the growth of stablecoins, the status of tokenless blockchains and blockchain-as-a-service offerings, and the latest on central bank digital currencies (e.g., China’s digital currency electronic payment initiative). It concludes with a summary of implementation challenges that enterprise applications must overcome to gain traction. It’s time for blockchain innovators to address enterprise leaders’ tough questions about use cases, regulation, criminal usage, and environmental harm.

Decentralized Finance Analysis: How to Identify Value Within the Crypto Ecosystem

In this project, our research leaders develop a method of formal analysis of the value of decentralized finance (DeFi) initiatives. Inspired by Vitalik Buterin’s writings on the intrinsic worth of projects in the crypto economy—that they must solve legitimate human problems on a macro scale—our researchers mirror the approach of Benjamin Graham and David Dodd in Security Analysis. For several different applications within the DeFi space, they identify the business metrics as well as the financial and social key performance indicators (e.g., staking yield, fees generated) that will help investors distill signals from the noise—that is, the inherently valuable projects from what Graham and Dodd protégé Warren Buffett called “rat poison.” Although this research is by no means as detailed as Security Analysis, we think it will “shake readers from the memetic psychosis that has propagated crypto booms and busts over the past decade,” to quote the authors.

The Digital Yuan and Cross-Border Payments

Central banks, rev up your digital currency engines! The race to global adoption is on, and this case study of China’s e-yuan captures the first mover in action. Co-led by PhDs—one a fintech advisor, strategy consultant, and researcher based in Hong Kong/Singapore, and the other a professor at the Schulich School of Business in Toronto—the case digs into the Chinese government’s approach to the research, development, and roll out of its digital yuan. The authors analyze China’s digital currency electronic payment in terms of the government’s joint venture with SWIFT, its Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, and the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as in the context of the Communist Party of China’s political and economic goals. They cover the drivers of the technology, the People’s Bank of China’s careful testing of use cases, and the potential impact on Western organizations conducting business with and within China.
